On to enjoying Spring

I started this post a few days before Easter as I was planning my Easter egg hunt but then the flu that has been squatting in my home struck again. At this point I should just buy Tylenol and Gravol by the cases.

Easter morning began a few hours before for me because I had to stay up and wait until Cesina fell asleep to hide eggs and leave the chocolate & jellybean trails. Then wake up super early to hide the clue filled eggs outside before she woke up. Lucky for me the weather co-operated and the rain held off until she was done.

These are the clues I placed inside the eggs but I also drew her a map because she can't read yet and I wanted to make sure she would find all the eggs. Good thing I did because my husband didn't read any of the clues.

Your find first clue is in your shoes-breezeway-rainboots
I love sailing the high seas -by the boat-diving board
Your bench is the perfect resting spot- bench on front porch
Who needs a park when you have this to slide down!-green slide
I sure do hope for a warm Summer so you can go swimming alot--in front of deck door
This is your mommy's fave furniture and takes lots of pictures of you and your sisters while your sitting on them- dinning room chair
I love your mommy's baking...it's sure hot in here-oven
I'm so hot I can dry clothing- dryer
You love to put your toys here so you sisters can't reach them when they climb the sofa
- window above your sofaHurry up and get your next clue before the fish eats it- her top bunk bed
Brrrr..it's kinda cold out here but at least it keeps the food from going bad- fridge
Have you had your bath today?- shower
Happy Easter!

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly holidays go by. Weeks worth of work are over in what seems minutes. The only trace of Easter is the large tin of chocolate and jellybeans but I am glad to have a break from all the decorating. The constant putting up and taking down while taking care of twin babies seem a little much at times. On to enjoying Spring and all the beauty it brings

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” ~2 Corinthians 5:17

The Traditions of Easter
As with almost all "Christian" holidays, Easter has a secular side as well. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication.

Easter has always had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival. It was co-opted by Christian missionaries starting in the second century CE.

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Easter. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they do what Christian missionaries have always done; they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner.

It would have been dangerous for the very early Christian converts to celebrate their holy days with observances that did not coincide with celebrations that already existed. To save lives, the missionaries decided to spread their dogma slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner.

As it happened, the pagan festival of Easter occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian observance as pagans were slowly indoctrinated. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter.

The Date of Easter
Prior to A.D. 325, Easter was variously celebrated on different days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In that year, the Council of Nicaea was convened by emperor Constantine. It issued the Easter Rule which states that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. The "full moon" in the rule is the ecclesiastical full moon, which is defined as the fourteenth day of a tabular lunation, where day 1 corresponds to the ecclesiastical New Moon. It does not always occur on the same date as the astronomical full moon. The ecclesiastical "vernal equinox" is always on March 21. Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25.

The Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol originated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.
The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time.

Easter Egg

As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.
From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of birth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.
Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy.

The Lenten Season
Lent is the forty-six day period just prior to Easter Sunday. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is a celebration, sometimes called "Carnival," practiced around the world, on the Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. It was designed as a way to "get it all out" before the sacrifices of Lent began. New Orleans is the focal point of Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S.

Not exactly Easter weather but this was the view outside my window last Monday.
But I made the most of it by prepping for Easter.
Dr.Oz dissected the ingredients of some of the Easter candies. I so happy mini-eggs are not on this list!

Peeps
-Corn Syrup
-Sugar and other ingredients used to be combined with the gummy extract of the Althaea officinalis, or marshmallow, to make a sweet, spongy treat. Nowadays, sugar is mixed with corn syrup to make the fluffy guts of these puffy poultry.
-Gelatin
-Protein derived from animal skins, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones (in the form of hydrolyzed collagen) allows these chicks to keep their shape, even when they’re heated in the microwave. (Try it. It’s amazing.)
-Carnauba Wax
-The little eyeballs that seem to stare at you accusingly just before you chomp on them are made of this substance, which is excreted by a Brazilian palm tree.

Cadbury Creme Egg
-Milk Chocolate
-Yellow 6
-The yolk gets its brilliant color from an azo dye built around double-bonded nitrogen atoms. Yellow 6 also helps give Kraft Macaroni & Cheese its rich golden hue.
Egg Whites
-The white inside this ersatz egg actually contains the real thing. A mix of several proteins, half of which is ovalbumin, it’s likely used to make a sticky, meringue-like foam.
-Calcium Chloride
This sidewalk de-icer is also used to coagulate soybeans into tofu and milk into cheese curds. Here, it probably helps whiten and solidify the crème.

Chocolate Easter Bunny

-Cocoa Mass
What you get when you grind the center of the cacao bean, called the nib, into a thick liquid. Also known as unsweetened chocolate or chocolate liquor.

-Sugar
We’ve been cutting the bitterness of cacao with sucrose cane extract since the 16th century.

-Milk Ingredients
In 1875, Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter mixed cocoa with Henri Nestlé’s condensed milk formula for babies and made this semiplastic solid. By law, US milk chocolate must contain at least 12 percent milk solids.

-Cocoa Butter
The fatty part of the cacao bean. It melts at human mouth temperature, transporting the chocolate flavor across the taste buds and providing some people with proof that there really is a God.

-Soy Lecithin
A blend of phospholipids that acts as an emulsifier, keeping the other ingredients from separating.

I don`t even want to think about the junk in these pre-made cookies but I was feeling quite sick the last few days so I cheated with the Easter cookies.
For $6.00 Walmart had this great kit with 12 cookies, 2 coloured icing packs and 2 bags of sprinkles and candy. One very happy 5 year old and no cleaning afterwards = one very happy mommy.

Wishing you a very Blessed and Happy Easter!!

Easter Egg hunting ideas and letters from Peter Cottontail

I  can't believe it's almost been a week since I blogged last. Between being sick, cleaning the garden beds and Alejandra's teething, blogging never stood a chance.
Here is the pile that never made to the fire pit. I went pruning happy in the fall so this normally would be twice as big. This year it will be a pruning extravaganza!

Still soooooo much more to do but I love seeing flowers in my garden.

Even though they are picked quite quickly.

They are loved!!!

This was the first time the twins have been outside ....they are definitely country girls.
Alejandra was so impressed with the sky.

Valentina was tasting everything!

The Easter basket hunt is going to be so much fun with them . I stopped placing eggs through out the house because Cesina took no interest to them so I decided to create an adventure like Dora and have her hunt for her Easter basket instead. I made a map for Cesina to follow around the backyard and hide eggs with clues inside as to where the Easter bunny had left her basket, which was Daddy's garage. She  enjoyed the hunt more so than the goodies in the basket. I am hoping for good weather this year but have a couple of ideas just in case. Starting with special Easter basket hunting shoes. click on the image for the directions.

Bunny Parade - Ask the kids dress up for the Easter egg hunt with bunny ears, nose and a tail, or maybe a full bunny costume. Before the hunt have a Bunny Parade. The cutest bunny OR the bunny with the best ears could win a Prize.

Hop n Hunt - Make the kids hop around to hunt for the eggs. Most of the kids will probably forget all about hopping after they have found the initial few eggs, but it will ensure a good spirited start. Another variation could be have all the kids stand in a line and then at the start of the hunt, they have to hop to a finish line before they start collecting eggs. If the hunt is outdoors, you could draw a chalk line for the finish. If indoors, you could have a ribbon spread across for the finish line. For added fun you can give a prize to the child who reaches the finish line first. You can also place a lot of eggs just around the finishing line or ribbon so that they are easy to pick for the first few kids to reach them

Obstacle Hunt This is a good choice if you are having the Easter egg hunt outdoors in a big backyard or at a park. Just like in an obstacle course race, you could have various activities interspersed with egg collecting. For example, at the starting buzzer the kids race to the next spot where they have to thread a needle and only when they complete it can they run ahead to the next spot (collecting all the eggs along the way of course). Some other activites could be jumping over a cardboard box , going around a chair five times, blowing up a balloon, drinking a glass of water, eating a boiled egg and so on. The first child to reach the finish line wins a prize.

Puzzle Treasure Easter Egg Hunt – For this hunt you would need a puzzle (not more than 25 pieces , with each individual piece small enough to fit inside an egg). Here are the steps: First put the puzzle together. Then flip it over and write a clue across the back pointing to the treasure. Take the puzzle apart and put one or two pieces in each egg. Then hide the eggs for the hunt. The children will have to find all of the eggs and put the puzzle together in order to figure out where the "treasure" is.

Easter hunt map- Tun your hunt for Easter eggs into a hunt for treasure. Create a map using pictures, showing little ones where the eggs can be found. To make it more fun, have another map waiting with more clues in some of the spots you've designated.

Easter Egg Hunt with a message - Have a regular egg hunt, but in 12 plastic eggs put a number and a scripture telling a part of the Easter story Then when the kids find the eggs and are sitting all together, call out the numbers one by one and have each person read their scripture. You can have the kids tell the story of Easter.
Just like the traditional letter from Santa , I have started the traditional letter from the Easter bunny. It comes in handy when she starts to misbehave because just like Santa, the Easter bunny only brings chocolate to the well behaved boys and girls. This site allows you to create 3 personalized letters, has three different wordings and template colours to choose from. The basic letter is free if you would like the doorhanger and envelope it is $1.99. Click on the image if you would like to create a letter.

This is a funny letter for an adult.

Happy free Easter printables Wednesday!

I have lost count as which cold we are going onto now. It seems as soon as we are all getting over something, along comes another cold right behind it.  I am in love with tylenol flu extra strength and cepacol, they have become my BFFs. On a good note this makes for instant diet because I have no appetite and can't really swallow.

Good thing it's already April 6 and I am busy getting the last minute preparations done for Easter to really let this cold drag me down.

History of Easter

Easter is the celebration of new life.At Easter, we celebrate the earth’s new year of growth, after the cold, dark days of winter. Eastre, the goddess of spring, gave the Easter festival its name and favorite animal, the rabbit. The rabbit, or hare, represents love, fertility, and growth. Many people around the world have a day to celebrate the arrival of spring.Easter has its beginnings in ancient Christian holidays, pagan celebrations, and spring festivals. Long before the celebration of Easter as the resurrection of Jesus Christ, people celebrated a spring festival. The sun was an important part of the celebration. Without it, there would be no life on earth. The people feasted, danced, sang, and exchanged gifts. They rejoiced over the rebirth of life in the fields and forests. Today these customs and legends combine to make our Easter Sunday.Easter is some time between March 22 and April 25 and comes at the end of the Christian Holy Week. It may fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon following March 21 which is the first day of spring. The Easter egg is a good example of a custom that began many thousands of years ago. For ancient peoples, the symbol of new life was an egg. When the shell was broken, a new life came into the world. Some myths state that the world itself began as an huge egg. The world-egg split in two. The upper half became the heavens and the lower half the earth. For thousands of years, it has been the custom to give eggs as gifts during the spring festival. Today we have fun dyeing them in bright colors and decorating them with simple designs.Other customs and practices of Easter include wearing new clothes to celebrate the new year of life. In New York City and many other big cities, an important part of the holiday is the Easter Parade. People stroll in their new clothes, with many women and young girls wearing Easter bonnets, hats that have been decorated with flowers and pretty ribbons.
